UNDER A VENUSIAN MOON ? THE CASE WAS STILL UNSOLVED IN -- March 1887. The Arctic harbor of Archangel was covered by the winter's snow for half a year now. Rigorous frosts lasted here longer than throughout the territory of Russia in general. Perhaps, the only place in this hemisphere where it is colder than in Archangel was one of the train stations in Siberia, if in fact it was possible to call a nameless place there a "station." In December 1886, from Archangel to Moscow by rail began the long-awaited train. It was an express containing mail and passengers. In all probability, it is unnecessary to add that this train had been awaited with unusual anticipation. The news about its imminent arrival flew from mouth to mouth in the city. People were at alert on the platforms and around them all through the night before it departed. After months of separation with their relatives and friends, news of a successful meeting at last turned into reality with the approaching of that express. The train left the still-dark railroad station with great noise, just as if announcing to all that it had arrived. The engine burned its last drops of fuel inefficiently, creating an unbearable smoke that spread everywhere. The sleeping passengers who were thrown out by the strong movement of the train were slowly waking up. Women cried out with joy, hugging their sons and husbands they had not seen for so long. Finally, the longed-for meeting happened at last! With one voice they shouted loudly, laughing and crying at once. I was standing far behind them by the locomotive. As I watched them hugging each other there on the platform in utter oblivion to everything else, I remembered my own family far away in St. Petersburg. I remembered my mother's feelings at this moment, though she was very different from all of them. Longing for and worrying about her and her sister seemed to me in that situation very familiar and warm, and I told myself: "I, too, love my family." I had been traveling for three months now by train through the Russian Empire, reading in my mind almost all of what I had just heard. Meanwhile the train kept on moving forward steadily because it had to go faster than usual to catch up with another express that was ahead of it. Not far ahead was another station where the passengers would get off so they could continue their trip by car to Moscow. 5cfa1e7782021
